Last week we did a fun post on the top 5 makeup looks that men like for women. Number five on the list was the natural look. We all know that the best natural look starts with great skin, so this week we’re going to talk about how to tackle your skin care regimen for the best results. The first thing to note is that no matter what your skin type (oily, dry, etc.), you need at least two skin care regimens: one for fall/winter (increase the moisture) and the other for spring/summer (increase the SPF). Your skin care needs change with the season and so should your regimen. Dry Skin:Use a gentle cleanser without any harsh chemicals, specifically made for dry/sensitive skin. Use a gentle toner followed by a day-time moisturize with a good SPF (25 or greater). Finally, use a tinted moisturizer as a base. If you need more coverage, you can apply a concealer for trouble spots and blend well or apply a thin layer of foundation on top of the tinted moisturizer. Avoid mineral makeup as these tend to be more drying. At night, replace your day-time moisturizer for a richer night-time alternative. There are some great products out there, but our favorite and very affordable ones are from Olay. Normal Skin: Use the mildest cleanser that will remove dirt and debris without over drying your skin. Follow with a good water-based moisturizer with SPF sun protection. If you have combination skin, use products for normal skin for your entire face and treat the special areas separately. If you have dry patches, use a richer moisturizer on those areas. If you have an oily T-Zone, treat those areas with products that will help control the oil and shine. We really like the more natural products for normal skin and Origins has some organic and award-winning products that are truly fantastic. Oily Skin: This is a very difficult skin type to keep clear and one that is most often mistreated. Use a cleanser specifically for oily skin but one that does not make you feel too-tight. Over drying your skin will only add to the problem, because it causes your oil glands to produce more oil. We love Clarisonic use with your favorite cleanser for oily skin. It helps to really remove makeup and dirt completely, something that an oily skin with large pores really needs. Follow up with a water-based moisturizer and make sure you do not skip it. Your skin doesn’t need oil but it still needs hydration. Don’t forget your SPF. To further control shine, you can apply a thin layer of a pore minimize/mattifier under your favorite foundation. We recently did a wedding makeup application where the bride turned us on to the Benefit Pore-fessional. We are now addicted. A very affordable skin line for oily skin is Neutrogena. We also really like PCA Skin. For all skin types, remember to exfoliate once-a-week and drink plenty of water.
